Privacy Policy for Obsidian Notes Extension
Last Updated: June 11, 2025
This Privacy Policy describes how the "Obsidian Notes" Chrome Extension (referred to as "the Extension") collects, uses, and handles your information when you use our extension. Your privacy is important to us.
1. Information We Collect
The Extension collects the following types of information:
- Authentication Information:
- Your Obsidian API Key: This key is required to connect the Extension to your local Obsidian vault. It is stored using Chrome's synchronized storage (`chrome.storage.sync`) to allow it to be available across your logged-in Chrome browsers.
- Web History (Contextual Data):
- The URL and title of the active web page: This information is used to automatically populate the source link and title for your notes. This data is accessed only when you interact with the extension on a specific page.
- User Activity & Website Content (Your Notes and Settings):
- Note Content: Text, Markdown, and any images you type or paste into the notes panel. This content is processed locally and sent to your Obsidian vault. Drafts may be saved locally in your browser's storage (`chrome.storage.local`) for persistence.
- Pasted Images: Images you paste into the notes panel are sent to your local Obsidian vault.
- Extension Settings: Preferences such as the drawer side (left/right), the list of blacklisted sites where the extension should not activate, and the extension's enabled/disabled state. These are stored locally in your browser's storage (`chrome.storage.local`).
The Extension does not collect personally identifiable information such as your name, address, email address, age, or identification number, beyond what you might voluntarily include in your notes. It does not collect health information, financial/payment information, or personal communications outside the notes you create within the extension.
2. How We Use Your Information
The information collected is used solely for the following purposes:
- To enable the core functionality of the Extension, which is to create and save notes from web pages directly into your local Obsidian vault.
- To store your Obsidian API Key securely for authenticating with your local Obsidian instance.
- To provide context (URL and title) for the notes you create.
- To save your preferences and settings for a personalized experience.
- To temporarily store note drafts locally to prevent data loss.
3. Data Storage and Security
- Obsidian API Key: Stored using `chrome.storage.sync`, which is managed by Google Chrome and synchronized across your devices where you are logged into Chrome.
- Note Content and Settings: Stored locally in your browser using `chrome.storage.local`. This data remains on your device.
- Communication with Obsidian: The Extension communicates directly with your local Obsidian instance (typically at `http://127.0.0.1:27123`). Your notes and images are sent to your own Obsidian vault, under your control. The Extension does not send this data to any external third-party servers.
We take reasonable precautions to protect your information, but please note that no method of electronic storage or transmission over the internet is 100% secure.
4. Data Sharing and Transfer
We do not sell, trade, or otherwise transfer your data to outside parties or third parties.
The data collected is used exclusively for the single purpose of the Extension as described. We do not use or transfer your data for purposes unrelated to the item's single purpose, nor do we use it to determine creditworthiness or for lending purposes.
The only "transfer" of data occurs when:
- Your API key is synced by Chrome across your own devices.
- Your notes and images are sent from the Extension in your browser to your local Obsidian application on your computer.
5. User Control and Choices
- You can review and clear data stored by the extension (API key, settings) through your browser's extension management settings or by clearing browser storage.
- You can uninstall the Extension at any time to remove it and its locally stored data (though data already saved to your Obsidian vault will remain there).
6. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the "Last Updated" date. You are advised to review this Privacy Policy periodically for any changes.
